Project Entry:
Michigan Street Development-Innovative Survey Monitoring System
Grand Rapids, Michigan: Fleis & VandenBrink Engineering, Inc.
Spectrum Hospital is building a new addition. Part of this $120 million project, a 20-foot diameter tunnel was designed and built 50 feet under Michigan Street, and a 75 foot high earth retention system was built for the new structures. F&V was charged to monitor the earth retention system and an adjacent high-rise office building to ensure that construction activities did not cause the building to lean, and that the earth retention was functioning as designed. New technology was employed that provides consistent and accurate measurements for the life of the three-year project.
