Michigan’s top engineering and surveying projects recognized at annual excellence awards ceremony

LANSING – The American Council of Engineering Companies of Michigan (ACEC/M) recently honored 16 firms for engineering and surveying excellence during the association’s annual awards ceremony.
On February 20, industry professionals and guests gathered at the Grand Rapids Public Museum in Grand Rapids to recognize outstanding Michigan engineering and surveying projects from the past year. Since 1965, firms have competed to receive ACEC/M’s top honor – the prestigious Eminent Conceptor Award.
This year’s engineering Eminent Conceptor winner was Grand Rapids-based Prein&Newhof for the PARCC Side Clean Water Plant in Plainfield Charter Township, MI. The new $48,000,000 wastewater treatment plant serves five communities in northern Kent County. The state-of-the-art treatment process uses a membrane bioreactor and ultraviolet radiation to prepare effluent for discharge into the Grand River and can treat an average of 6 MGD.
Five firms were honored with the Honorable Conceptor Award, the second-highest award of achievement: Hubbell, Roth & Clark for the Delhi Township Digestion System Improvements (Holt, MI); Bergmann Associates for the Farm Lane project (MSU-East Lansing, MI); Harley Ellis Devereaux for the Hertzberg-Davis Forensic Science Center (Los Angeles, CA); Wolverine Engineers & Surveyors, Inc./Jones & Henry Engineers, LTD. for the Mason Radium Removal WTP & Transmission Mains (Mason, MI); and CSSQRD, INC. for the Severstal NA 2007 “C” Furnace Rebuild (Dearborn, MI).
The solo Surveying Merit Award winner was Wade Trim for the I-696 Wall Monitoring Survey Project (Royal Oak, MI). Engineering Merit Awards were presented to URS Corporation for the 35th Street Bridge over the Kalamazoo River (Galesburg, MI); C2AE for the Camp Curnalia Waterwater Collection & Treatment System (Higgins Lake, MI); URS Corporation for Dexter Transportation and Recreation Improvements (Village of Dexter, MI); Albert Kahn/Wade Trim for the Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital (West Bloomfield, MI); NTH Consultants, LTD. for The Mission to Save Humbug Marsh (Trenton, MI); Parsons Brinckerhoff Michigan, Inc., for The Rosa Parks Transit Center (Detroit, MI); Stanley Consultants for the Roy E. Peffley Chilled Water Plant (Lansing, MI); and Johnson & Anderson, Inc. for the Water Supply & Treatment System Upgrade and Expansion (Waterford Township, MI).
The Judges’ Choice Award for Board Design was given to Fishbeck, Thompson, Carr & Huber for the Lot 56 – Porous Pavement and Rain Gardens in Mt. Pleasant, MI.
This year’s Vernon B. Spalding Leadership Award was presented to Benedict Tiseo, PE, to honor an engineering career that spanned more than 40 years. The Felix A. Anderson Image Award was presented to Tom Newhof, PE, co-founder of Prein&Newhof and an active participant in professional associations and his community throughout his career.
The 2010 Engineering & Surveying Excellence Program offers the opportunity to showcase the year’s best engineering and surveying achievements to an audience of peers, clients and decision makers at all levels. Eminent and Honorable Conceptor award winners are eligible to compete at the National ACEC competition in Washington, D.C.
