Bi-partisan bills introduced to increase user fees on gasoline and diesel fuel

Rep. Richard Ball (R-Laingsburg) and Rep. Pam Byrnes (D-Chelsea) show leadership through effort to increase investment in Michigan's transportation infrastructure and to avoid losing billions in Federal dollars - 1/29/2010

On Tuesday, January 26 bi-partisan bills were introduced by Representative Richard Ball (R-Laingsburg) and Representative Pam Byrnes (D-Chelsea) to increase user fees for gasoline and diesel fuel.

HB 5768 will increase the tax on gasoline by 4 cents to 23 cents per gallon (effective March 1, 2010). On January 1, 2013, a second 4 cent increase will take effect raising the tax to 27 cents per gallon.

HB 5769 will increase the tax on diesel fuel by 6 cents to 21 cents per gallon (effective March 2010). On January 1, 2013, a second 6 cent increase will take effect raising the tax to 27 cents per gallon, making it the same as gasoline.

The additional revenue collected as a result of the increases will be deposited into the Transportation Investment Fund, which will be created by HB 5770. The money can only be spent on transportation projects and cannot be diverted to other state departments or for other purposes.

ACEC/Michigan has met with Representatives Ball and Byrnes to show our appreciation and support for their leadership on this important issue.
