Legislative Day
Each year, the organizations that form the Architects-Engineers-Surveyors Legislative Committee (AESLC) jointly host a legislative “lobby” day in Lansing. The goal is to have members of the organizations come to Lansing to visit with their respective legislators and share with them the issues of importance to the engineering, surveying and architectural professions.
The 2025 Engineers, Architects & Surveyors Legislative Day was held in person in Lansing on Tuesday, April 15. This in-person event provides a critical opportunity for industry professionals to engage with legislators, advocate for policies impacting Michigan’s infrastructure, and help shape the future of our transportation system.
Why Attend?
- Meet face-to-face with state lawmakers to discuss pressing infrastructure and engineering issues.
- Advocate for sustainable transportation funding and other key legislative priorities.
- Strengthen relationships with policymakers and industry leaders to ensure the voice of Michigan’s engineering community is heard.
Key Issues for 2025
One of the major focuses of this year’s Lobby Day will be advocating for a long-term, sustainable, and equitable funding solution for Michigan’s transportation system. While major freeway reconstruction projects were completed through the Rebuild MI bonding program, MDOT now faces $270-$300 million in annual debt payments for the next 27 years. Without a dedicated funding solution, Michigan’s infrastructure will continue to decline.
As engineers, we are uniquely positioned to explain the condition and need for investment better than anyone. The legislature values our expertise, and this is an excellent opportunity to ensure the profession has a seat at the table when funding solutions are discussed.
